Hardware & Troubleshooting FAQ

Hardware & Troubleshooting FAQ

Welcome to the comprehensive guide for Fleetr hardware. Below you will find answers to common questions regarding device compatibility, installation, troubleshooting, and general operation.

General Information & Compatibility

What is OBD?

OBD stands for On-Board Diagnostics, an automotive term that refers to the diagnostic and reporting capabilities of a vehicle. OBD is a valuable tool for repair technicians, vehicle owners, and fleet managers, as it is used to monitor the health and performance of the vehicle’s engine and emissions system.

Are all vehicles compatible with your devices?

Almost all types of vehicles made after 1996 are compatible. Some older vehicles may have less engine data available.

Is the operation of my vehicle affected by the device?

No. The device should not affect the normal operation of your vehicle.

Diagnostics Ports & Adapters

I don't have an OBD port. What should I do?

The easiest way to install an OBD device without a standard OBD port is to use an adapter. There are many different adapters depending on your vehicle's diagnostic port type. Diagnostic ports are generally located below the steering wheel on the left side.

There are three main types of diagnostic ports:

  • 6-pin (J1708)

  • 9-pin (J1939)

  • OBDII

Generally, light and medium-duty trucks use OBDII ports, whereas heavy-duty trucks use 6-pin or 9-pin ports. Volvo and Mack trucks with OBDII ports use a different, heavy-duty cable. You can use your vehicle’s engine type and year to identify your port using the guide below:

Troubleshooting

1. I connected my device, but it doesn't turn on any lights. What do I do?

Try to do a few trips, as the device may take a little while to turn on. Alternatively, there may be a short circuit in the power supply to the device port. Please contact Support if the issue persists.

2. My device suddenly stopped working. What to do?

Turn off the engine and unplug the device for 5 minutes, and then try again. If it is still not working, try leaving it plugged in overnight. If, after following these steps, the issue persists, please contact our support team to proceed with the replacement process.

3. My vehicle won't start after connecting the device. What does that mean?

This is probably due to your vehicle's battery rather than the device.

4. When I connect the device my vehicle's alarm turns on or my airbag light comes on. What does that mean?

The alarm and airbag lights are not associated with the device's connection. There may be a problem with the vehicle itself; please contact your dealer.

Device Operation & Policies

1. What is the battery consumption of the device on my vehicle?

The device has a consumption of less than 3 milliamps (an electrical charge equivalent to 0.036 Watts of power for a 12 Volt battery) in an idle state.

2. How often is it recommended to start my vehicle to charge the battery if I don't use it often?

It's recommended to start your vehicle at least once a week and leave it running for 5 minutes to maintain a battery charge.

3. Does the device keep logging trips data if it loses signal?

Yes, it records and stores data locally, and then transmits it to the platform when the cellular signal returns.

4. What if the device is damaged by myself or my drivers?

There is a $50 replacement fee for any damages that are a result of negligence or misuse by the driver including lost device.
