Asset tracker connection troubleshooting

Here in this article, we will be discussing the different states of your asset tracker. For the best tracking results, we encourage you to place your asset tracker open to the sky so it is receiving a consistent signal without obstructions. Here we will discuss:

  • "Establishing signal" status
  • Cell trilateration using cell data
  • Low cell signal

"Establishing signal"

You might notice at times that when you hover your mouse over your asset tracker there is a text that is displayed as "Establishing signal", this very common for our asset tracker devices. This happens when a device does not receive a GPS signal during a report. If your device is inside a metal building, this is expected. You may be able to increase GPS signal by placing your device in a location more open to the sky.

Why is my device not displaying in its original location?

When your device is not receiving a GPS location because its signal is blocked it goes into a fallback method to locating the device, this state is called Cell Trilateration. In this state, it attempts to ping 3 cell towers in the area, and triangulate a position in the middle of them for a more general location. With this, the unit will display the coordinates of the trilaterated area.

Low cell signal

If your device had a weak cellular signal during some recent scheduled reporting times. This may cause some of your reports to be stored and sent at a later scheduled time. Even though the location has not been updated, things like the battery will be updated. Again, you may be able to increase cellular signal by moving the device to a more open area.
